So, like most people during their teen years, I developed acne. However, my experience was a little different than most people. When I first got acne, it wasn't bad at all. I never worried about it because I had maybe one or two pimples at a time. My parents also told me that it would all pass and they would stop showing up.
No big deal, right?
Well as I continued to get older, my acne got progressively worse. I was like the Benjamin Button of acne; everything was going in reverse. By the time I was 22 and 23, I had full blown cystic acne completely covering my cheeks. It was one of the worst experiences of my life. I could barely make myself go to class or work; if you think looking people in the eye is hard, try it with a face full of acne. My self-esteem was....is there a word worse than awful?
Of course, I tried all sorts of treatments during this time. I will admit, the retinol treatment my dermatologist gave me worked pretty well. My acne cleared up pretty well, but it didn't go away completely. Worst of all were the side effects; my skin was so itchy that it was driving me bonkers. Also, it makes your skin pretty sensitive so I would wake up with scratch marks because I had been itching throughout the night! Finally, I'd have to keep taking it which I was not looking forward to at all.
Now that was the treatment that worked the best for me; everything else I put on my skin ranged from "not bad" to "downright waste of money." I tried many different options over the years so I was pretty upset by this point. I was well past my teen years and I thought I'd have my acne forever; I really had no light at the end of the tunnel...at all.
At about this point I had started looking into more natural alternatives for treatment options. Things like baking soda, apple cider vinegar, aspirin and other such household items. They were cheap so I didn't have to worry about wasting my money; they were much gentler than typical chemical treatments and didn't irritate my skin; and lastly, they worked pretty darn well! I can't quite pinpoint when it is I started such treatments; I just remember reading about one dermatologist's experience with acne prone people and he stated that everyone that has acne has sensitive skin. As such, you should be treating it as delicately as possible.
Now most people hear delicate skin and acne and think, "Oh yea, I know. I shouldn't touch my face, I should pat dry my face and not rub it, I need to use unscented laundry detergent, etc etc." I believed all of these myself. But also, think about it for a second; chemicals, no matter how gentle they are for us, are still chemicals. They can never interact and absorb into our skin in completely natural ways!
When I started down this road, I really had no idea where it would lead me. It first started with natural products that I put onto my skin. However, I started reading more into natural and holistic methods of healing. I've seen incredible stories of people beating cancer and completely controlling their diabetes through regimens of healthy eating, fasting and generally healthy lifestyles. If this could work for cancer, I figured it had to work for something as benign as acne.
What I soon discovered was that acne actually doesn't have a single thing to do with our skin! Not one problem related to acne starts at our skin. Every single cause and factor of acne begins inside our bodies. However, since we see the obvious breakouts and pimples on our skin, we naturally assume that's where the problem is. Oh sure, the acne bacteria, P. Acnes, does exist on our skin, our pores do get clogged with oil, bacteria and dead skin and the like. But the really big question is, "What's causing these problems on my skin in the first place?"
For instance, the P. Acnes bacteria exists on every single person in the entire world. Everyone in the world has oil on their skin. Everyone in the world has dead skin on their face. What's so different about us?
Well, the short answer is our genes; we're just acne prone people. We got the short end of the stick when it comes to that. However, that's not the end of it. It's not even close! We might get acne, but other people get migraine headaches, or the might gain weight more easily, or they might become sick more easily. Just look at your friends and their health problems. We can kind of consider ourselves lucky when it comes to that.
But the long answer is a little more involved.
Whenever you eat a meal, your body breaks down the food into something that your cells can absorb. Insulin is also released into the blood stream to help this process. Normally, this isn't a bad thing however the problem is caused because we typically eat foods that are converted into sugar in the body. This causes a torrential outpour of insulin into the bloodstream. Every so often, this isn't bad. However, as I said, typical meals nowadays continually cause this to happen.
The issue is this huge release of insulin over and over causes a few problems. First of all, it's a pretty big drain on our bodies and our immune system. It causes it to slow down and not deal with problems as well as it should. It causes a constant low-grade inflammation in our bodies. It also allows P. Acnes to multiply out of control on our skin. Finally, the constant release of insulin causes both our oil glands to go haywire and make to much oil as well as causes our skin cells to dry up and die off faster than normal.
Another problem is since such a large amount of insulin is released, it causes a very fast drop in our blood sugar levels. In turn, our body craves sweets and other bad foods to get our blood sugar levels back up to normal. This is the typical "muchies" feeling you get. These feelings are caused by a release of another hormone called androgens which, in turn, cause the same exact problems as insulin: bacteria, dead skin and oil.
So if you missed the importance, all of our acne problems are directly attributable to these hormones and our lifestyles. Now you don't have to eat like a rabbit and shun everything except for spinach and water. I still drink wine and beer with dinner, I have dessert and I love pizza. I wouldn't give any of them up.
But there is a way to help kick start your body's immune system into clearing up the problems. Simply put, don't eat! But more specifically, fasting is the key. A fast from food diverts tons of energy that your body would normally expend in digestion and allows it to take care of problems within. Hands down, it is the most powerful and quick way to cure your acne because you are attacking the real problems within your body and getting rid of them once and for all. Fasting allows you to reset your body's immune system as well as its insulin response to food.
A one week fast four years ago has kept my acne free, minus the errant one or two pimples I get every so often, ever since. I eat slightly healthier than I did before, but I still enjoy all the bad things in life too.
Cure your real acne problems within your body through fasting and your acne will have no choice but to be completely eliminated forever.
